The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the “Bridge in the Sky,” is a remarkable colonial-era railway bridge located in Ella, Sri Lanka. Built during the British colonial period, this architectural marvel stands at 24 meters high and 91 meters long, featuring nine elegant arches that blend seamlessly with the lush green surroundings.

Construction & Design (1921)

The bridge was commissioned by the British as part of the railway expansion connecting Badulla to Colombo. However, during World War I, a shortage of steel delayed the project. According to local legends, when the steel intended for the bridge was redirected for war efforts, a Sri Lankan engineer, P.K. Appuhami, and his team of local workers built the bridge entirely with stone, brick, and cement—without a single piece of steel.
